The year is 1884.
The English composers Gilbert and Sullivan are in desperate need of a success in spite of
their great fame. They disagree whether they should write another operetta or try
something more serious. Finally they agree on the operetta "The Mikado", which
proved a big success later. The
film takes its starting point in reality and follows the production from beginning to end,
focusing on the highlights of music and the performance of the actors, with a keen eye for
the tragical as well as the comical aspects of the artistic process.
The director, Mike Leigh, is
known for his unsentimental presentations of the dreariness of everyday life in England:
"Life is Sweet", "Naked" and "Secrets and Lies".
The film, which will have its
premiere during the festival, has most kindly been made available for the festival by the
Danish importer Sandrew-Metronome.
