Film 24: Misery Harbour
Danmark, Norge,
Sverige, Canada 2000 Spillelængde: 120 min |
|
Denne
han over bord for at blive skyllet op i den lille canadiske havneflække Misery Harbour (
3D elendighedens havn).
"Barbara".

The working title
of this film was "The Flight from Jante". It takes its
starting point in the life and works of the controversial Danish-Norwegian
author Aksel Sandemose. He formulated his so-called Jante law on the basis of his
childhood memories from the Danish island of Mors. His best known novel is "A
Fugitive Crosses his Tracks" from 1933. Sandemose´s literary alter ego Esben
Arnakke, the hero of the film, is played by Nicolaj Coster Waldau - whom many people will
remember from the film "Nightwatch".
The plot is set in Oslo in 1932, where Espen is telling the woman he loves,
Jenny, about his wild days as a young man. He became a sailor in a desperate attempt to
get away from the oppressive poverty at the Danish island of Mors. After some serious
disagreement on his ship he jumps overboard and is washed ashore near the small Canadian
town of Misery Harbour. His enemy and former colleague also appears to be in the town,
however, and the result is a fatal confrontation. - Back in Oslo Jenny fails to believe
that Esben would be able to kill another human being, but now and then truth may turn out
to be much stranger than fiction, even much worse.
Jenny is played by Anneke von der Lippe, who made her name in Denmark as the sensual title
character in Nils Malmros´ "Barbara".
The Norwegian director Nils Gaup is best known for "The Pathfinder" from 1987.
The film editor is Anders Refn.
The film will have its Danish opening with us and has most
kindly been made available to the Festival by the Danish
importer Sandrew-Metronome.
