The film is a
timeless fable about a small mountain community that is being
destroyed, when the wolves come - or is it...? - In a remote corner of the
mountains of a Central European country there is a small community of
peasants with very little contact with the surrounding and more civilized
world. The plot focuses on strong Verona, who loses her husband, when the wolves suddenly
appear during their wedding festivities. A young boy, Goran, saves her from the wolves,
and in return she promises him that he can marry her daughter, Veronica, when they grow
up.
Some years later, however, a circus comes to the small town. The performers settle down
and are gradually becoming assimilated by the locals. When the two children grow up their
feelings for each other seem to be turned in other directions: Veronica falls in love with
Michael, the rather shady son of the circus director, and after some time it appears that
Goran is in love with Veronica´s mother, Verona.
Like in ancient Greek drama the characters of the film are metaphors of
mankind, and the ultimate consequences of their feelings are of universal
validity. Like some other films of the late 90ies, the film is also inspired
by the millennium, and there are several references to Nostradamus and his prophecies
about the end of the world.
The music was composed by Ondrej Soukup, one of the winners of our festival in 1997. This
year he is a member of the festival jury.
The film will be shown with English subtitles.
